Choosing the Perfect Location For Senior Pictures | Melissa Braden Photography

Choosing the perfect location for you senior pictures can be difficult in Colorado Springs. There’s a plethora of options. So how do you choose?

1). How do you want your senior pictures to look?

This plays in part with your style and what you will be wearing at your session. If your style is Urban Grunge look for locations that have lots of buildings (downtown Colorado Springs), graffiti (Knob Hill Art District), industrial areas, train tracks etc.

If your style is Fun & Flirty or Bohemian,  look for locations that have open fields, tall grass and even the mountains in the background.  Garden of the Gods Park is a great locattion that has diverse areas to give different looks and backgrounds.

Maybe you want the mountains in the background. One of my favorite spots in the mountains is North Cheyenne Canon. This location really gives your senior photos the Colorado feel. There are gorgeous mountain peaks, lustrous trees and flowing streams to set the mood and style of your session.

2.) Choose a Location that offers variety

Choosing a location that offers a variety of unique features and spots to use. This will maximize your time during your session. If your choosing a park look for one that has flowers, rock or brick walls, bridges and perhaps access to water.

3) Do you need a permit to shoot at the location?

There are some locations that require you to have a permit to photograph. Many hotels want prior notice before you arrive, and some private gardens will charge a fee. Fee’s can start at $25 and up.

4) Is the location crowed?

Since Colorado is such a beautiful state, we often run into this problem. If we know the location is a hot tourist spot, we will work around the time that it’s busiest. This may mean early morning sessions with the sun rising!

5) Finding Inspiration

Thankfully the internet makes this easy! Pinterest is one of the best places to look for styling, outfits, locations, hair & makeup. Check out my other senior photo galleries to see if you can find some inspiration from their sessions.

Ask family and friends if they have any ideas or if there is a location that they have access to that the public doesn’t. Locations outside of Colorado Springs can be perfect too!

I hope these tips for choosing the perfect location for your senior portraits helps you find the most amazing location for your pictures. This is something we will discuss during your pre-session consult. So come with ideas in mind!
